IoT standards body’s sixth industry day will feature talks and panel discussions from top minds and key players in the IoT sphere
Hyderabad, India, 10 September, 2019: As the Internet of Things (IoT) continues its ascent as a multi-billion-dollar market in India, oneM2M, the global IoT standards initiative, will host its sixth Industry Day in one of the country’s foremost centres for technical innovation and output.
Government representatives, industry leaders and IoT innovators will gather at oneM2M’s Industry Day, taking place in Hyderabad, India, on September 25, to highlight the critical role standards will play in enabling mass adoption of the IoT across Asia.
Hosted by Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India (TSDSI), the Industry Day will feature a packed line-up of speakers, panel discussions and demonstrations, focusing on IoT standardisation in key areas including smart cities and transport, as well as major industries such as health, safety and agriculture. Speakers will include governmental representatives, key figures in the Indian industry and representatives from oneM2M founding Partner TSDSI and event sponsors India-EU Cooperation Project on ICT-Related Standardisation, Policy and Legislation.
“India represents an exciting market for IoT innovation, with adoption and investment continuing to grow at an exponential rate,” said Roland Hechwartner. Technical Plenary Chair at oneM2M. “Consequently, it is important that as IoT technology builds on the economic and societal footing in India, standardisation is explored in earnest as a way to ensure interoperability and reliability. The Industry Day provides an invaluable platform to discuss optimal standards practices both nationally and globally and how specifications, such as oneM2M’s, can provide an interoperable IoT framework that can overcome the challenges faced by city authorities, developers and operators.”
How oneM2M standards are being implemented successfully worldwide will also be demonstrated, with India’s Centre for Telematics, C-DOT showcasing its oneM2M-based communication platform and a collaboration between Chordant and Definition Networks demonstrating how oneM2M can be interworked to support underlying 3GPP Network Services.
“In India, vertically siloed application vendors make up a large part of the IoT application environment, which exposes users to the risk of being locked into expensive proprietary solutions when deploying and extending their IoT applications,” said Ms Pamela Kumar, Director General, TSDSI. “This is especially true in the smart city ecosystem and is the reason why IoT standards for common service functions, interoperability and security are critical to unlocking the full potential of interworked applications, which will, in turn, create harmonised smart city environments.”
Hechwartner, accompanied by Technical Plenary Vice Chairs Yongjing Zhang, of Huawei and JaeSeung Song, of KETI, will also discuss the key features of its upcoming set of specifications, Release 4, and how they can be applied to a range of verticals and utilities.
Set to be published in Q4 of 2020, Release 4 will further build on the interworking capabilities outlined in Release 3 to support interworking between a breadth of sectors, including smart cities and Industry 4.0.
The Industry Day comes following oneM2M’s and C-DOT’s latest workshop in New Delhi, India, which was held last month. The workshop brought together leaders from across the globe and highlighted how standards can secure an open future for IoT and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) applications across India.
As a country at the forefront of smart city innovation, India launched its smart cities mission in the face of a growing urban population to deliver technology-efficient and sustainable living spaces. An investment worth $1 billion for 100 smart cities over the next five years is expected to be a major enabler for IoT adoption across key industries.

oneM2M is the global standards initiative that covers requirements, architecture, API specifications, security solutions and interoperability for Machine-to-Machine and IoT technologies. oneM2M was formed in 2012 and consists of eight of the world’s preeminent standards development organizations: ARIB (Japan), ATIS (U.S.), CCSA (China), ETSI (Europe), TIA (U.S.), TSDSI (India), TTA (Korea), and TTC (Japan), together with industry fora or consortia (GlobalPlatform) and over 200 member organizations. oneM2M specifications provide a framework to support applications and services such as the smart grid, connected car, home automation, public safety, and health. oneM2M actively encourages industry associations and forums with specific application requirements to participate in oneM2M, in order to ensure that the solutions developed support their specific needs.
