Windsor, N.C. — A sergeant at the Bertie Correctional Institution has been stabbed with a homemade weapon by an offender, according to Jerry Higgins with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.
Higgins says the assault occurred at 1:15 p.m. on October 25. An inmate pulled a shank and stabbed the sergeant, a 17-year veteran employee.
The prison was placed on lockdown, Higgins says. Both the sergeant and the inmate were taken for outside medical attention, treated, and released within three hours.
This is the same facility where a correctional officer was attacked and killed in 2017.
